Whole Bean vs. Ground Coffee: How to Choose the Right Grind

Whole roasted coffee beans in a burlap sack

Quick answer

Buy whole bean if you own a grinder, because it stays fresh longest. Buy standard grind for drip machines and pour over. Buy coarse grind for French press and cold brew. Every Haluan coffee comes in all three.

The grind you choose matters as much as the coffee itself. Too fine and your cup turns bitter and muddy. Too coarse and it tastes thin and sour. The fix is simple: match the grind to the way you brew.

Why grind size changes the taste

Brewing is extraction. Hot water pulls flavor out of the grounds, and smaller particles give up their flavor faster. A brewer that keeps water in contact with coffee for a long time, like a French press, needs a coarse grind so it doesn't over-extract. A drip machine moves water through the bed in a few minutes, so a medium grind works best.

Whole bean: the freshest option

Ground coffee has far more surface area exposed to air, so it loses aroma faster than whole beans. If you have a burr grinder, buy whole bean coffee and grind right before you brew. It's the single easiest upgrade you can make to your morning cup.

Standard grind: drip and pour over

Our standard grind is a medium grind, about the texture of coarse sand. It's built for automatic drip coffee makers and works well for most pour over brewers too. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons per 6 ounces of water, the ratio the National Coffee Association calls the Golden Ratio.

Coarse grind: French press and cold brew

Our coarse grind looks like kosher salt. The large particles hold up to long steeps without turning bitter, and they're easy to filter with a French press screen or a cold brew strainer.

Can I switch grinds later?

Yes. Every Haluan coffee page has Whole Bean, Standard and Coarse buttons, so you can pick a different grind each time you order. Coffee of the Month Club members choose their grind when they join.

FAQ

Does grind size change caffeine?

Grind affects how quickly coffee extracts, so a finer grind brewed the same way can pull a little more out. Your ratio and brew time matter more than grind for how strong a cup tastes.

Can I use coarse grind in a drip machine?

You can, but it will likely taste weak, because water passes through too quickly. Standard grind is the better match.

How long does ground coffee stay fresh?

Keep it sealed, away from air, light and heat, and try to finish an opened bag within a couple of weeks for the best flavor.
